CNOC achieves milestone with ultra-deep well in Bohai field amid difficult conditions

(MENAFN) The Tianjin branch of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOC) announced the successful completion of drilling a new well, reaching an impressive depth of 6,088 meters in the Bohai field, China’s largest offshore oil field. This accomplishment, reported on Tuesday evening, marks a significant advancement in the extraction capabilities of CNOC in offshore drilling.

According to new Chinese news agency, the newly drilled well, designated as 19-6D1, is set to play a crucial role in extracting oil and gas from the Pushhong 19-6 gas condensate field. This field is notable for being the first gas field in Bohai with proven reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas in seawater. The drilling of wells deeper than 6,000 meters is categorized within the industry as ultra-deep, underscoring the technical prowess required for such operations. These ultra-deep wells are essential for the exploration and extraction of oil and natural gas from both deep water and the earth's deep layers.

The process of drilling the well in the Bohai field presented numerous geological challenges. The ground temperature at such depths exceeded 180 degrees Celsius, coupled with extreme atmospheric pressure at the well’s lower levels. The drilling team also encountered two subterranean mountain formations, which were significantly fractured, adding to the complexity of the drilling operation. Despite these formidable conditions, the successful completion of well 19-6D1 demonstrates CNOC's advanced technological capabilities and resilience in overcoming harsh drilling environments to harness vital natural resources.
