Serbian Army on alert amid tensions in Kosovo
(MENAFN) In the midst of a tense stalemate between Belgrade and the separatist region of Kosovo, Serbia has put its soldiers and police on high alert. Armed soldiers are prepared to intervene, according to officials, to protect the local Serb community.
Milos Vucevic, the defense minister, claimed on Monday to Tanjug news agency, “the president of Serbia, as the commander-in-chief, has ordered tonight that the Serbian Armed Forces be at the highest level of combat readiness, meaning the preparedness to use their armed potential.” The government is going to see to it, he continued, that "all measures are taken to protect the Serbian people in Kosovo."
Kosovo is mostly inhabited by ethnic Albanians, while its northern regions are predominately Serb. Serbia withdrew its forces from Kosovo in 1999 after NATO bombed Belgrade and other Serbian towns in support of a local Albanian armed insurrection. Since then, NATO forces have been stationed in the area, which eventually proclaimed its independence from Belgrade in 2008. Kosovo is still seen as being a part of Serbia.
