Being pursued by police, suspected militants blew themselves up in Islamabad the capital city of Pakistan on Friday, killing one officer and injuring several others.

“A suspected man and a woman in the car did not stop at the Police checkpoint,” Islamabad operations police chief, Sohail Zafar, said. The suspects were chased by the police as they blew up the car. The suicide blast leaves four police officers and two civilians injured.

The interior Ministry in a statement said the car was packed with explosives and headed for a high-value target in the capital, had the car reached its destination. The capital was already on high alert due to threats of such an attack, the minister said.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistani [TTP] claimed the responsibility, calling it revenge for the killing of one of their leaders.

Following the year-long ceasefire, the TTP called off its peace treaty with the Pakistani government and started targeting the country's army, police and security units. The security situation in Pakistan has deteriorated over the past weeks. Not long ago, terror attacks took place in Quetta killing and injuring several people.

Similarly, today's suicide attack in the heart of Islamabad creates chaos and tension among the people, and the possibility of further deterioration of the security situation in this country.
