AMMAN - Head of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of industry Fathi Jaghbeer and an Omani delegation on Thursday discussed means to enhance economic relations between both countries.

During a meeting with the guest delegation, representing the Oman investment Authority and a number of Omani companies working in the fields of telecommunications, food industries, logistics and ports, Jaghbeer emphasised the necessity of advancing bilateral economic relations.

Trade exchange between the two countries dropped by 6.5 per cent, during the January-September period, to reach about $95.5 million, Jaghbeer said, noting that the Sultanate ranked 12th among Jordan's Arab trading partners.

He added that Jordanian industrial exports to Oman comprise no more than 0.2 per cent of Omani industrial imports.

Jordanian exports to Oman include fertilisers, vegetables, fruits, chemicals and pharmaceutical products, while imports comprise plastics, rubber, metals and fish, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Also on Thursday, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company Mohammad Thneibat met the Omani delegation over advancing cooperation in the mining field, notably the phosphate fertiliser industry.

Highlighting the need to establish a Jordanian-Omani partnership in this field, both sides discussed the possibility of establishing phosphate fertiliser factories in Oman to avail of the Sultanate's capabilities as a sea freight provider, Petra added.

Both sides agreed to form a joint committee to follow up on opportunities for cooperation in the fields of phosphate fertiliser and sea freight.
