(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — The government, known for its“credibility, clarity and disclosure,” has public interest as its goal, Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said on Monday.
During a Lower House session, Khasawneh stressed that“this government is far from most of the previous governments, which resorted to loans throughout the history of the Kingdom”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The premier also stressed that the government should adapt, and be able to disclose information to the people, the Lower House and the media with 'full transparency'.
He noted that the balance of public revenues with the high tax rates, and basic public spending — of which salaries constitute some 70 per cent— equals JD2 billion. The government has taken on debt to cover basic public spending for years, he said.
Khasawneh added that international price fluctuations will be reflected in the domestic prices of fuel derivatives, as“the Treasury does not have the luxury of subsidising fuel prices again”.
The government has already provided JD550 million in fuel subsidies this year, but will cease doing so as to avoid significant debt and budget deficits.
The prime minister added that the inflation rate in the Kingdom currently stands at 4 per cent, which is among the lowest in the region.
