As Bahrain has elections, people protest, groups criticize "repressive" environment

(MENAFN) Bahrainis protest and human rights groups condemn a "repressive atmosphere" as the US-allied Persian Gulf state holds parliamentary elections after dissolving the major opposition organizations and cracking down on dissent.

Overnight, demonstrators flocked to the streets of the seaside hamlet of Dumistan, bearing photos of Bahrain's most important cleric, Ayatollah sheikh Isa Qassim, imprisoned Political dissidents, and those slain by Regime forces.

They expressed sympathy with political prisoners and detained activists and urged people from all walks of life to boycott the November 12 elections.

Protesters also demanded the cessation of human rights violations and the release of political prisoners.

In the northern villages of Abu Saiba and Shakhura, demonstrators demanded an election boycott, a comprehensive political solution in the face of the Manama regime's crackdown on dissent, and a transition from monarchy to rule of the people, by the people, and for the people, as well as a new constitution.
