Ukraine gets first shipment of NASAMS, Apside air defense systems

(MENAFN) According to Ukraine's military commander, the country has received its first supply of NASAMS and Aspide air defense systems, as the West continues to pour modern weaponry into the ex-Soviet republic despite Russia's warnings.

Ukrainian Defensive Minister Oleksii Reznikov stated in a tweet on Monday that the new defense systems will "substantially enhance" the Ukrainian army against Russia in the continuing battle that began on February 24.

"We will continue to shoot down the enemy targets attacking us. Thank you to our partners: Norway, Spain and the US," Reznikov further posted on Twitter.

NASAMS, or the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, is a joint venture between Raytheon Technologies in the United States and Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace in Norway.

The weapon system is a distributed and networked ground-based air defense system meant to take down drones, helicopters, cruise missiles, and crewed fixed-wing aircraft.

Aspide, on the other hand, is a medium-range air-to-air and surface-to-air missile system from Italy that has a semi-active radar homing seeker.

Reznikov said last month that Germany had delivered the first Iris-T defensive system to his country. The missile is a medium-range infrared homing missile with air-to-air and ground defense surface-to-air versions.
