Strong quake hit Pacific country

(MENAFN) A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit Papua New Guinea on early Sunday, with earthquakes felt widely in the Pacific country of 9 million.

The epicenter was at a depth of 90km (around 56 miles), not far from the town of Kainantu in the eastern part of the nation, the US Geological Survey (USGS) stated.

It at first issued a tsunami warning along the coasts of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, but soon made an announcement that the warning “has now passed.”

Fatality figures are up to now uncertain, with unconfirmed reports of homes buried and damaged.

Residents reported buildings shaking across the country, as well as the capital Port Moresby, some 480km away.

One observer described the tremor as “very strong”, claiming “everything was like sitting on a sea – just floating.”
