NHRC Secretary-General Discusses Cooperation With Turkish Officials

Ankara: Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Committee H E Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, held two separate meetings in Ankara with President of the Court of Cassation of the Republic of Turkey H E Mehmet Akarca, and President of the Turkish Confederation of Public Service Employees' Unions H E Ali Balgin.

The two meetings saw the two sides agreeing on exchanging expertise, consolidating cooperation and communication to organize joint activities to promote and preserve human rights.

In his meeting with the President of the Turkish Court of Cassation, Al Jamali stressed the great convergence and intersection between the work of national human rights institutions and justice institutions towards providing means of achieving justice among members of society, referring to the participation of the National Human Rights Committee in May 2014 in organizing an international conference that served as a building block to establish an Arab Court of Human Rights, similar to many regional courts, such as the European Court and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which are established on the basis of regional human rights agreements through which independent judges are appointed to look into any abuses that may be practiced by signatory states to those agreements. In turn, HE Akarca pointed to the need for cooperation in order to advance the concepts of human rights, and joint work to consolidate the basic principles aimed at preserving human dignity everywhere. 

In the other meeting with Balgin, Al Jamali discussed the role of the federation of trade unions in protecting and promoting economic, social, cultural, personal and professional rights, as well as their role in standing against any kind of unfair or illegal practices within the framework of the international human rights system, and ensuring the improvement of wages, social benefits, working conditions and the professional standing of public officials. 

He also noted that the National Human Rights Committee was able, through the course of 20 years of work, to win the trust of the international community, with the Committee currently chairing the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) represented by HE Chairperson of the Committee Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah.

The Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Committee pointed to the renewal of the accreditation for the Committee at the grade A for the third time in a row, noting that this accreditation is an indication that the National Institution is on the right path towards protecting and promoting human rights.
