Turkey doubts US forces operations in Greece
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has questioned the United States's need to extend its military presence in Greece, as well as Washington's argument that the bases are required to fight Russian aggression.
Erdogan made the remarks during a meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Ankara, “currently, nine US military bases have been established in Greece. Whom have they been deployed against? They say that against Russia. But we won’t buy that.”
For decades, the United States has had a military presence in Greece. The Ottoman-founded naval facility of Souda on the island of Crete is the only one in the Mediterranean capable of accepting the biggest American aircraft carriers.
