Iran confiscates Greek ships in response to US 'piracy'

(MENAFN) On Friday, Iranian military detained two tanker trucks carrying the Greek flag in the Persian Gulf, as Tehran condemned the seizure of one of its own boats in Greek waters early this week, branding it "piracy" by the US. According to reports, Washington intends to sell the ship's oil cargo, which was seized as a result of Russian sanctions.

According to Lloyd's List, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy personnel boarded the tankers Delta Poseidon and Prudent Warrior on Friday, May 27th using helicopters. As per the source, the ships were “later escorted by naval vessels from international traffic lanes to Iranian waters a few miles off the coast.”

The Greek Foreign Ministry verified the two boats' capture and requested their release. Iranian media also verified the capture of the ships, emphasizing that it was in retaliation for the acts of the Greek government. The Greek flag is flown by more than a quarter of the world's tankers.

According to Nour News, an IRGC-affiliated publication, “the Islamic Republic has decided to take punitive measures against Greece after it seized an Iranian tanker and let the US government confiscate its crude oil.”
