'Nuclear arms race' can be triggered by 'extremely undesirable' AUKUS deal

(MENAFN) On Monday, Sep. 20 the fresh security deal between the US, UK and Australia was denounced by North Korea, calling it “extremely undesirable” and cautioning it could provoke a “nuclear arms race.”

And regarding the AUKUS pact, under which the US and UK will offer Australia technology to construct nuclear-powered submarines, Foreign Ministry official state: “these are extremely undesirable and dangerous acts which will upset the strategic balance in the Asia-Pacific region and trigger off a chain of nuclear arms race.”

The head of the ministry’s Foreign News section said to the official Korean Central News Agency that condemnation from regional nations, comprising China, is “natural” and Pyongyang will “certainly take a corresponding counteraction.”

Such “irresponsible” actions are capable of “destroying the peace and stability of the region and the international nuclear non-proliferation system and of catalyzing the arms race,” he noted.
