(MENAFN- Sudanow Magazine) KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - The 22nd edition of the Mango Festival, has put to display more than 30 varieties of the Sudanese mango.
The annual festival was organized here during Saturday-Sunday by the Sudanese Horticulture Society, in collaboration with the Sudanese Center for the Sterilization of Horticultural Exports.
The festival has brought together producers, exporters and specialists to get acquainted with the latest information about this fruit, which is widely dubbed the Queen of Fruits, and its economies.
Sudan’s mango output is about an annual one million tons from tens of mango varieties grown in the country.
Sudan’s main mango producing areas are South Kordofan (southwest), the Blue Nile (southeast), Sinnar (center), Greater Darfur (west) and Nahr Alneel (north).
In an address on the festival sidelines, Agriculture Minister Dr. Altahir Harbi, has said“it is obvious that all of us, producers, manufacturers and exporters are on the right track, seeking to reap maximum benefit from this crop that distinguishes our country.”
Harbi said mango is on top of his ministries portfolio in a bid to boost the country’s economy.
President of the Sudanese Center for the Sterilization of Horticultural Exports, Abdelrahman Mohammad Abdelmajid, said 2021 is the year for mango production in terms of quality.“We are working with the best existing European technology in mango freezing, safety and preservation," he said.
According to the Sudan Trade Point Sudan’s major mango markets are Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Qatar, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, the Netherlands, Germany, England and Greece.
The mango tree can grow to a height and crown width of about 30 metres (100 ft) and trunk circumference of more than 3.7 metres. The fruit is highly nutritional, containing vitamins A, C and G. It also contains proteins, fats and citric.
Mango works to build blood and helps in cases of anemia, thanks to its high content of iron.
The potassium and magnesium quantities available in the mango fruit help in cases of muscle shrinking and soothe hypertension.
Mango is one of the most rich natural products in beta carotene acid, an anti-oxidant substance.
It also contains Vitamin B complex that enforces the nervous system. Mango also contains gluten acid which is considered an ideal nourishment for the brain in terms of concentration and memory.
A medium mango fruit contains the individual’s daily need of fibers, a substance that mitigates constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
