Decline 2.6 pct seen in Thailand’s GDP in Jan.-Mar. period

(MENAFN) On Monday, May. 17 official figures demonstrated that Thailand's economic expansion narrowed 2.6 percent from a year ago in the January-March period of this year as continued COVID-19 outbursts hit consumption and tourism industry.

Figures from the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council showed that the narrowing advanced from a drop of 4.2 percent in the October-December period last year.

On a quarterly basis, Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) climbed a seasonally amended 0.2 percent in the first three months, in comparison with the previous quarter's expansion of 1.1 percent.

The condition has put the Thai administration into a dilemma of bolstering local demand and having fresh COVID-19 break out with the nation’s overall coronavirus caseload more than tripling in the last six weeks to 111,082 on Monday.
