Somaliland: Ministry of Information's Communications Office Burns Down

(MENAFN- SomTribune)

The communications and monitoring office of the Somaliland Ministry of Information burned down to the ground on, Tuesday.

Monitoring equipment at the office completely burned down devoured by the roaring fire.

The fire brigade reached the ministry, not in time to save the office or its digital equipment, but succeeded to contain the fire which could have spread to the other parts of the compound.

Although the police have yet to release an official statement of the incident, investigations have not completely ruled out arson.

Other sources indicate, though, that since the office was not occupied at the time and closed up for the day, it is more likely than not that faulty electrical appliances might have caused the fire.

A number of employees of the ministry had been taken for questioning.

The Ministry's Communications and Monitoring office was inaugurated in October 2018 to, chiefly, monitor Somaliland and Somalia news broadcasts and was, according to officials, expected to upgrade soon to cover both Somali and international coverages relevant to Somaliland,

The ministry was beset by a number of setbacks since the new government has taken office in December 2017.

For some time past, both the national radio's short-wave service and the television's local broadcast had been off the air for some time without plausible justification.
