New York, Dhu-AlHijjah 20, 1437, September 21, 2016, SPA -- President Barack Obama of the United States held on Tuesday evening a summit on refugees and the financing of humanitarian operations at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
A speech was delivered by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Head of the Delegation of the Kingdom to the annual session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
In the speech, the crown prince highlighted the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's great efforts in relief work and humanitarian aid.
The crown prince said that the Syrian people's crisis requires more effective action to stop their suffering by finding a solution to it noting the Kingdom's support for Syrian people and its reception of more than two and a half million Syrian citizens and has been careful not to deal with them as refugees or asylum seekers in order to preserve their dignity and safety and allowed those who wanted to stay in the kingdom to do so and their number reached about half a million Syrian citizens and gave them the opportunity to work and freedom of full of movement and free education and health care.
The crown prince said that the Kingdom provided support and care to millions of Syrian refugees in Syria's neighboring countries with aid reaching more than USD800 million in addition to the aid provided by Saudi citizens in many occasions.
The crown prince added that for the Yemeni brothers who sought refuge in the kingdom, the kingdom considered them as visitors and provided them with a lot of facilities, including exclusion from residence and work regulations.
The crown prince stated that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud ordered the establishment of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Center of Relief and Humanitarian Action in 2015.
The crown prince said that with regard to refugees in other countries, the Kingdom provided them in February 2016 with support of 59 million dollars to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and that the value of the Kingdom's commitment to provide assistance to Afghan refugees in Pakistan reached 30 million US dollars, in addition to the Kingdom's pledge to provided 50 million dollars to the Indonesian Government to support the Rohingya refugees in Indonesia.
The crown prince stated that he is pleased to announce on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud the commitment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to provide additional 75 million dollars to support the refugees in coordination with international organizations.
