Oman meets Lebanon in beach soccer opener

Former champion Oman takes on Lebanon in its opening clash of the beach soccer event of the fifth Asian Beach Games (ABG) that will be held in Da Nang in Vietnam on September 25.

The ABG will be held from September 24-October 3 and feature 22 sports disciplines across five venues.

Coached by Talib Hilal, the 12-member Oman team left for Vietnam on Sunday.

Oman is placed in Group B along with Lebanon and Qatar in the 12-team event that comprises four groups.

Oman meets Qatar on September 27 with top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals.

The final will be held on October 2. Despite the short preparations, Talib sounded confident of a good show ahead of the event. 'We are going to fight for a podium finish and I am confident that the boys will give their best,' he said.

'We won the gold in 2008 in Bali when the sport was introduced and then took silver in the second edition in Muscat. In the previous two Games, we have not been able to finish on podium. Our aim is to be there this time in Da Nang,' said Talib.

Other teams: Group A:Vietnam, Thailand, Laos; Group C: UAE, Uzbekistan, Palestine; Group D: Japan, China, Afghanistan.
