(MENAFNEditorial) Experts say that teaching road safety to young children is vital to developing good habits and saving lives, and pupils at a Dubai primary school had fun learning the lesson this week.
More than 80 students, ages 3 to 6 year old, at Horizon International School took part in one-hour Audi 'Heroes in Training' sessions.
After a briefing on road safety rules, the children got behind the wheel of a fleet of mini electric Audi R8 Spyder cars on an interactive course complete with traffic lights, road signs, junctions and roundabouts.
Rounding off the session, the youngsters were each presented with Audi ''Heroes in Training' driving licences.
"It was great fun, but there was a serious side to the exercise as well," said Ali Al Nabooda, General Manager, Audi, Al Nabooda Automobiles.
"We introduced the Audi 'Heroes in Training' initiative last year to build road safety awareness among young children between the ages of 3 and 6 in Dubai and the Norhern Emirates.
"It combines fun with basic education, and has put smiles on the faces of several hundred children, not to mention teachers and parents who recognise that the kids are being taught good, basic road safety habits they can carry forward in life."
Earlier this year the Ministry of Interior announced that 55 people aged under 18 lost their lives in 2014 in crashes, and warned that parents need to get more serious about their children's safety.
Traffic officers also reported that 572 youngsters sustained moderate to serious injuries in 148 car accidents involving children last year. Nationwide, child deaths accounted for 7.7 per cent of the 712 people killed in road accidents in the country.
Al Nabooda Automobiles, the exclusive distributor of Audi in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, will be taking the programme to a number of English and Arabic speaking schools next year.
