Kahlil Gibran's drawings at Sharjah museum

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Art Museum is hosting an exhibition of works by the influential Lebanese-American artist, poet and author Kahlil Gibran. The exhibition entitled Drawings of Gibran: A Humane Perspective is the first time Gibran's work has been displayed in the UAE on such a large scale.

"We are very proud to be hosting this fascinating exhibition which gives visitors a unique chance to see, and better understand, impressive and important aspect of the artistic work, of one of the Arab world's most noted artists and thinkers," Manal Ataya, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Department, said.

The free to the public exhibition runs until December 10 and is organised in collaboration with Gibran National Committee (GNC) in Lebanon. Showcasing around 30 works and manuscripts by Gibran, the exhibition chronicles his use of different mediums, which include watercolour, oils, and charcoal on paper and canvas.

Known mainly in the western world for his book The Prophet, Gibran was born in the town of Bsharri in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Ottoman Empire, now North of modern-day Lebanon. At the age of 12, Gibran immigrated with his family to the United States where he immersed himself in art and started his literary career. His romantic style, in writing and art, has been influenced by his Arabic roots as well as Western art forms as a result of living in Boston and having direct exposure to theatres, opera houses, and art galleries.

Since Gibran is an important figure in the West and East, the exhibition gives fans a chance to understand his work and process in a different light. Viewers are able to see the relationship between Gibran's art and writing and how the two mediums greatly influenced each other. The works include his 1916 watercolour, Face of a Veiled Woman, a charcoal self-portrait from 1908 and an oil painting from 1910 called The Sad Mona Lisa.

Gibran's work and influence is credited to be at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, which broke away from more classical ideas and techniques.
