Kerry meets Qatari counterpart on counterterrorism efforts

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Secretary of State John Kerry gave brief remarks to reporters Monday after a closed-door meeting on counterterrorism efforts with his Qatari counterpart, Khaled Al-Attiyah, at the Department of State, and reaffirmed "strong" ties between both countries.

Kerry said the Obama Administration "find in Qatar a very strong partner in the anti-Daesh (ISIL) coalition, and we're grateful for the role they have played," adding, "They are flying missions. They are engaged in helping with the foreign fighters effort, the counter-financing, the problem of messaging, the de-legitimization. So in every respect ... they are a significant contributing partner to that effort." Kerry also noted the Qataris "were particularly helpful with respect to Yemen and our efforts in the last few days to deal with some of the adjustments necessary to what has been happening there, and we're grateful for that help.

"As a member of the GCC and an important partner with respect to the entire Middle East region, we're grateful for the help that Qatar has been willing to provide, he continued. "And I look forward to ... always strengthening not just our relationship but the ability of the region to live in peace and stability," he concluded.

For his part, Al-Attiyah said it was a "good opportunity" for he and Kerry to hold these talks, and "exchange ideas" on issues of mutual interest.
