Mumbai Campa Cola residents fight eviction demolition again

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The civic squad that had gone to disconnect water and power supplies to 102 flats in the controversial campa cola compound in central mumbai as per the orders of the supreme court had to once again retreat on saturday as residents blocked the complex.

bombay municipal corporation (bmc) which has been asked to demolish 102 flats built illegally in many of the buildings in the compound has also filed complaints against the residents at the worli police station. they presented video recordings of the events of the past two days when members of the housing society prevented officials from entering the complex and carrying out their duties.

on saturday morning the demolition squad appeared before the gates to the compound which were locked from within.

women children senior citizens and other residents blocked the path preventing the civic team from disconnecting essential supplies.

a few hours later the civic team withdrew but told the residents they would be returning again on sunday.

there was a strong police presence on saturday though the authorities did not initiate any action against the residents.

the supreme court has ordered the demolition of all illegal floors in the complex.

the developer had illegally built additional floors in seven buildings in the 1980s. the residents occupying the 100-odd illegal flats claim they were unaware the floors were unauthorised when they had bought it in the 1980s.

most of them have been staying in the complex for nearly two decades. they argue they cannot be thrown out on the roads now; the civic body must initiate action against the developer and the corrupt officials who took bribes they aver. — nithinئkhaleejtimes.com
