Oman- Shops risk fine for failure to display accurate prices


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Omar Faisal al Jahadmi, director general of consumer services and marketing at the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP), has urged people to inform the authority about shops that do not display properly the prices of items on their shelves.

 ''I urge the public to report those shops which do not display prices properly to the PACP so that we can take action against them.

''Our lawyers usually hand out fines to such shops, the severity of which depend on several factors. I think it sends a strong message to such shops,'' he said. He issued the advisory while responding to a specific complaint that was brought to his notice recently.

Last week, Clara Daems, a homemaker, bought a few fruits, vegetables and a kilo of fresh chicken from a well known shop in Al Khuwayr, for which she was billed RO11.3.

''First of all, the prices were not displayed on the shelves, but I made my purchases anyway as I was in a hurry. Then when I saw the RO11 bill, I thought the prices were very steep, but I paid regardless. It's only when I got home that I took a good look at my receipt,'' she said.

According to her, the date and time on the receipt is incorrect and it doesn't specify the fruits and vegetables bought.

''Further, the chicken was nowhere to be seen on the receipt. I'm not suggesting something illegal is going on, but the salesman could assign different prices to different clients and we would be none the wiser,'' she added.

''I understand that sometimes a little bargaining happens in such shops, but when receipts are introduced, things must be clear,'' she
