Iraq in need of int'l community support to exit 'sectarianism': Shiite cleric Sadr

(MENAFN) The international community has received an appeal from Iraq's leading Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to give his country a hand in leaving "tunnel of sectarianism."

Sadr has held talks with UN special envoy to Iraq Jan Kubis, explaining that Iraq is in need of international and UN support "to get out of the tunnel of sectarianism and to prevent regional interference in the Iraqi elections file," his office said in a statement.

The statement also noted that Sadr highlighted the necessity of help in humanitarian and service fields in the liberated areas, more specifically in Mosul.

It also confirmed both leaders to have held talks on recent developments following the elections, as well as the creation of the new government.
