Taliban attack on Khwaja Sabzposh district repulsed


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A coordinated Taliban attack on the Khwaja Sabzposh district of northwestern Faryab province has been beaten back by security forces, officials said on Monday.

Abdullah Masoomi, the district administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a large number of militants launched the assault on Sunday night.

He said two security check-posts were controlled by the insurgents for some time. The rebels came close to the district centre but were pushed back by the security personnel.

Col. Mohammad Hashim Bator Baik, the district police commander, confirmed the attack and said they had responded with heavy and light weapons. Clashes continued till 2am.

He added the rebels retreated due to strong resistance from the security personnel. About 20 of the assailants suffered casualties during the firefight. There has been no word yet from the Taliban.
