An eight-month-old boy is in critical condition in a Hong Kong hospital after he fell into a shallow pool of water with his baby walker at a residential housing block in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, on Saturday.

At 7pm, the boy's parents, a 35-year-old French banker and a 38-year-old Chinese woman, took the baby to a party at a barbecue site on the podium level of The Masterpiece, a luxury apartment block inside the K11 mall on Hanoi Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Apple Daily reported.

It was understood that the child, who was in a baby walker, at first stayed around his parents but later wandered off and fell into a shallow water trough that was about 30 centimeters wide and 5cm deep.

It took his parents a few minutes to realize he had wandered off. They and 10 friends at the party searched the site, and the mother finally found her son, still in his baby walker, in the water trough.

The lifeguard at the swimming pool next to the barbecue site rushed to the scene and tried to resuscitate the child.

Paramedics arrived and found the baby unconscious, and he was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Metro Daily reported.

The baby has been listed in critical condition.
