SLTDA raises concerns on poor regulations at Yala

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) width="247" height="428" data-recalc-dims="1" />The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA ) today raised concerns on poor regulations at the Yala sanctuary.

The concerns were raised after a photograph circulated on social media of trucks with tourists surrounding an animal in the park.

SLTDA said in a tweet that over-visitation and poor regulations at Yala is a long-running issue that is damaging the reputation of Sri Lanka.

"All stakeholders must unite to ensure better park management and visitor experience without further delay," SLTDA said.

The issue of over-visitation at Yala arose in January this year as well.

The Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) at a meeting in January with the Minister of Tourism and Christian Religious Affairs, John Anaratunga and the then Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, discussed the situation in Yala and handed over a detailed report to the two ministers that set out how the issue of over-visitation of Yala can be optimally managed to protect the interests of all stakeholders.

The report ascertained how the national park impacts various stakeholders and analyzes economic and environmental benefits that accrue to these stakeholders. Finally, it suggested an equitable balance based on established sustainable development principles and guidelines. (Colombo Gazette)
