KT: 5G commercial launch in 2019

(MENAFN) South Korean telecom giant KT Corp. has declared on Thursday that it will start commercial operations of its fifth-generation (5G) mobile network in March 2019.

The company said that it aims to provide "perfect 5G" service by establishing a nationwide infrastructure so faster and more stable data processing, far exceeding the capacity of the existing 4G network, or long-term evolution (LTE), will be available to mobile device users.

For the first time in the world, the company has offered a trial service of its 5G service during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, giving athletes and visitors the chance to experience data transmission speeds 40-50 times faster than LTE.

KT also plans not to commercialize the 5G network based on Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) currently pushed forward by the US mobile carrier Verizon Communications.
