(MENAFN) There is no question the general-turned-president el-Sissi will win a second four-year term. Seven years after a popular uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak in the name of democracy, the 26-28 election will hardly achieve that.
Proceeded by a purge of would-be opposing candidates, unprecedented even under Mubarak's nearly 30-year rule, the elections were also forgone by a clamp down on the media, even egging the public to report anyone they feel is depicting Egypt in a bad light.
Responding to criticisms on the issue, Mohamed Bahaa Abu Shaqa, spokesperson of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's electoral campaign, said that the government did not ban other candidates from running in the presidential elections in order to pave the way for Sisi's victory, Egypt Independent reported.
During an interview on the Sada Al-Balad satellite channel, Abu Shaqa said that Sisi is a noble person who would never plot a conspiracy against his competitors. "Neither Sisi's morals nor his dignity let him prevent any other person from running," he said.
The spokesperson pointed out that the Egyptian constitution guarantees electoral pluralism and that any eligible Egyptian citizen has been able to announce their candidacy.
