Qatar- Katara to launch second GCC Al Nahma Prize

Doha: The Cultural Village Foundation ( Katara) launches the second GCC Al Nahma (traditional maritime singing) prize tomorrow with the participation of 11 Naham (sailor singer) from Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.

The competition is scheduled to last until 17 March 2018. This event represents the efforts of Katara to preserve Qatars maritime heritage within its program to revive traditional and popular music in Qatar.

The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) second GCC Al-Nahma will feature 11 performances by 3 from Qatar, 3 from Kuwait and 5 from Oman, where the Katara Drama Theatre will host all the events, competitions and rehearsals .

The second edition features a comprehensive exhibition in building (18) that displays models of traditional wooden ships and old fishing tools used by the ancestors, in addition to the traditional maritime handcrafts like fishing-nets. The exhibition will also host some Nahams to recite some of the old traditional chants and poetry which were chanted onboard during the voyages in the old days.

The second edition will also host an elite group of researchers and specialists in maritime heritage and art of hospitality as guests of honour from Kuwait and Oman.

The first-place winner of Art of Al Nahma Prize will be awarded QR100,000, while the second-place winner will receive QR70,000 and the third-place winner will receive QR50,000.

Al Nahma is a maritime art and a significant patrimony in the whole region, as Al Nahham (the traditional singer) accompanies sailors during their journeys in the middle of oceans to motivate and entertain mariners and pearl divers, establishing one of the most important cultural tributaries that contributed to the emergence of most of the forms of singing, music and folklore in Qatar and the Gulf region.
