MICRO APARTMENTS IN CONCRETE PIPES DESIGNED TO EASE HONG KONG'S HOUSING CRISIS. OPod is a creative prototype designed by Hong Kong architect James Law to ease the housing shortage in one of the most expensive places to live on earth on Feb 18, 2018. Called OPod Tube Housing, the project sees 2.5-metre-wide concrete water pipes transformed into 9.29-square-metre homes, with doors that can be unlocked using smartphones. This innovative idea took a section of a giant concrete pipe and installed a modern apartment complete with a bench seating that doubles as a bed, a desk, mini fridge, microwave and a bathroom with shower. The idea is to utilize empty narrow spaces between buildings and stack the OPods between alleyways and atop buildings. James Law thinks residents could live happily in the tubes for one to two years. He believes they would appeal to "young people who cannot afford private housing". Photo courtesy idesignarch.com
