Google space contest to present no winners after a decade

(MENAFN) The Google Lunar XPRIZE revealed that the 30-million-U.S.-dollar contest to make a launch attempt to reach the Moon will not be granted to anyone after going on for ten years.

In a joint statement, XPRIZE Foundation founder Peter Diamandis and CEO Marcus Shingles declared "after close consultation with our five finalist Google Lunar XPRIZE teams over the past several months, we have concluded that no team will make a launch attempt to reach the Moon by the March 31, 2018 deadline."

They further stated "this literal 'moonshot' is hard, and while we did expect a winner by now, due to the difficulties of fundraising, technical and regulatory challenges, the grand prize of the 30-million-dollar Google Lunar XPRIZE will go unclaimed."

A range of approaches to continue were confirmed to be studied, with seeking a new title sponsor to present a different prize or proceeding the Lunar XPRIZE as a contest with no cash awards.
