Russia suspects US involvement in recent attacks on bases in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Jan 9 (KUNA) -- A U.S. reconnaissance aircraft roared for hours over Russian-manned Hmaimeem air base in northwestern Syria during a recent air attack on the base, Russian Ministry of Defense said on Sunday.

The Poseidon-type plane continued buzzing for four hours at an altitude of 7,000 meters between the air base and the Russian naval base in the port city Tartous, last Saturday, it said, indicating that the overflight coincided with an attack on the two bases by pilotless aircraft.

The Russian statement decried remarks made by the Pentagon spokesperson noting that the recent air strike on the Russian bases was executed with locally available gadgets that can be altered for military purposes. Programming such aircraft to drop bombs and provide accurate coordinates "is not easy and requires advanced technology," the statement said, expressing doubts that the Americans might have had a role in the operation.

Moscow had announced that its bases in Syria were attacked with remote-controlled aircraft and that the Russian forces shot down seven of the attacking planes, damaging three and seizing three others. No losses were reported as a result of the strikes. (end) as.rk
