Drive safe: Fog is here to stay in UAE

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Motorists were forced to drastically decrease their speed on many major roads across the country on Saturday morning as fog impacted visibility. Winter has well and truly hit the UAE as many parts of the country were covered in thick, dense fog on Saturday morning - and the eerie weather is set to continue over the next two days.

Be careful:Fog forces cancellation of Emirates flights, delays

"Tonight (Saturday) across the UAE there will be more fog formation, especially along the coast and inland, but mainly inland. This will continue for the next two days, with fog forming at midnight and clearing just after sunrise each day," an NCMS spokesperson told Khaleej Times.

Motorists were forced to drastically decrease their speed on many major roads across the country on Saturday morning as fog impacted visibility.

Be sure to do this:Get your warm clothes out, it's going to be cool and foggy

The NCMS has warned of continued poor visibility of less than 100m on roads between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah too.

As well as fog, seas across the country are expected to be rough over the coming days with wave heights of 4-6 feet offshore and 3-4 feet onshore.

"There will be a North Westerly flow from sea so humidity will increase late at night and will continue into early morning until Monday at least," NCMS spokesperson said.

Despite motorists and air passengers being directly impacted by the fog, many people are welcoming the change in weather.

Khaleej Times reader Syd Raza sent video showing a bed of clouds taking over the Sharjah skyline, and Nasr Ullah called the fog very nice and said he "loved it".

And Abu Dhabi-based Syeda Maria Imran said: "Beautiful weather in Abu Dhabi also, it's drizzling."

But as the thick fog continued to envelop the region, the community are rallying around to send out safety warnings.

"Yes, be very careful and switch on your head lights," Abdus Sami wrote.

On Saturday, the lowest temperature was recorded at Al Wathbah, at just 13.8 degrees Celsius, but the heat reared its head later in the day with highs of 37 degrees Celcius recorded in Swiehan.

'Numerous' flights affected

Air traffic was directly affected by the unusual weather too.

In a statement to Khaleej Times, a Dubai Airports spokesperson said heavy fog had disrupted operations at Dubai International "resulting in number of delays and diversions".

"Dubai Airports is working with airlines, air traffic control, the ground handler and control authorities to restore operations and minimise customer inconvenience," it said.

And an Emirates spokesperson confirmed that the severe fog in Dubai "caused the cancellation and delay of numerous Emirates flights arriving and departing at Dubai International Airport".

With the weather set to continue, passengers are urged to check their flight status on http://bit.ly/UAEWeatherfor the latest information regarding flights too.

"Emirates apologises for the inconvenience caused. The safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost importance and will not be compromised," the statement read.
