Orlando FL – July 29 2015 – Nutritional deficiencies are believed to be the cause of ocular diseases such as cataracts. There are people who are believed to be more susceptible to cataracts such as those who smoke are exposed to pollutants and have a diet that lacks anti-oxidant-rich foods. The good news is that there is a spice believed to be helpful as a preventive measure for the condition.
Some studies reveal the potential benefits of turmeric for cataracts. The spice contains an active ingredient called curcumin which is popularized by the antioxidant anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties it contains. According to researchers curcumin has the potential to prevent the development of cataracts induced by galactose selenium and naphthalene.
“Today curcumin can be easily used because of the availability of curcumin supplements in the market” said Divine Bounty spokesperson Melissa Scott.
In a study the researchers aimed at investigating the effects of both curcumin and turmeric on rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. It is important to note that one of the causes of the eye condition is diabetes. The researchers were also aiming at determining whether there was a reduction in the blood sugar levels and cataracts of the subject animals.
It was found that curcumin has significantly helped delay the progression of cataracts. It was also revealed that curcumin has successfully boosted antioxidant levels and inhibited lipid peroxidation. The researchers concluded that both turmeric and curcumin could potentially prevent cataract formation in rats with diabetes. They hope to apply the anti-cataractogenic agents of curcumin to the treatment of diabetes and resultant cataracts in humans.
In another study of Sprague-Dawley rats it was found that curcumin has the potential to delay the onset of galactose-induced cataracts and reduce levels of galactose-induced apoptosis. Galactose cataracts can be caused by oxidative stress. In another study it was also found that turmeric could be a potentially effective protective agent against cataracts.
There have been many studies about the effects of curcumin on a variety of eye conditions. Many nutritionists even recommend the use of turmeric as it is believed to be beneficial for eye health. Turmeric powder can be incorporated in one’s diet but there are also curcumin supplements available.
While curcumin is believed to have a myriad of health benefits it has low bioavailability and this means its absorption inside the body is limited. The good news is that there are natural ingredients that can be used to increase its bioavailability and one is BioPerine. This black pepper extract is believed to help increase curcumin absorption inside the body ().
