Russia Reaffirms Nuclear Arsenal as Core Pillar of National Defense

(MENAFN) Russian officials emphasized that the country’s nuclear capabilities continue to serve as a central element of national security, according to reports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia’s nuclear weapons guarantee protection against threats targeting the nation’s survival and sovereignty.

“A nuclear power cannot be threatened; its existence cannot be threatened. This is what gives us the opportunity to be confident in this, and this is the basis of nuclear deterrence,” he said.

Addressing ties between Moscow and European nations, Peskov noted that increasing debate within the European Union over the possibility of engaging in talks with Russia reflects what he described as a significant political change that aligns with Russian interests.

“This active discussion of this topic (dialogue with Russia), the shift towards the idea that someday we will have to talk to the Russians – this is good,” he said, adding that Russia was not the side responsible for the collapse of communication with Europe and remains willing to restore relations.

When discussing the prospect of a European Union representative participating in future negotiations with Moscow, Peskov mentioned Kaja Kallas, saying it is “in her interests not to be a negotiator with Russia.”
