Malaysia Ends Search After Migrant Boat Tragedy off Pulau Pangkor

(MENAFN) Malaysian authorities have ended a nearly week-long search and rescue operation following a migrant boat tragedy off Pulau Pangkor island, according to reports.

At least 16 people were confirmed dead, while 23 others were rescued after a vessel carrying 37 undocumented passengers capsized on May 11 in waters off the island, as reported by state media.

The Perak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the operation was concluded on Saturday after no further victims were found in the search area.

Officials noted that early estimates of the total number of passengers may have been inaccurate. The agency said initial information suggested 37 people were onboard, but this figure is now believed to be uncertain.

The deceased included nine men and seven women, with the bodies transferred to hospitals for identification and post-mortem procedures.

The search effort involved coordination between multiple agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Navy and Marine Police, as well as assistance from local fishing communities.

According to reports, the boat — believed to be carrying Indonesian migrants — capsized about 8.2 nautical miles from Pulau Pangkor while traveling toward destinations in Malaysia.

Malaysia continues to be a major destination for undocumented migration from poorer parts of the region, with authorities frequently warning that smuggling networks exploit maritime routes, resulting in repeated fatal incidents.

Officials also noted that a similar tragedy occurred last November when dozens of migrants died in a separate capsizing near the Thai-Malaysian maritime border.
