UN Committee Marks Nakba Anniversary, Reaffirms Palestinian Rights
New York, May 15 (Petra)-- The United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People commemorated the anniversary of the Nakba on Friday through a special event highlighting the historical and ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people.
According to a statement published on the committee's official website, the event aims to "continue drawing attention to this tragic historical event and the ongoing plight of the Palestinian people." The committee said the event reviews the historical context of the Nakba and the events of 1948, while also addressing the continuing patterns of dispossession and displacement faced by Palestinians. It further highlights how Palestinians experienced these developments and how they were carried out on the ground.
The committee added that the event seeks to help preserve Palestinian historical memory and share this narrative with UN member states and the wider public, while emphasizing existing obligations and possible avenues for meaningful international action.
In 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to officially commemorate the anniversary of the Nakba annually starting in 2023.
