Meloni Calls for Unrestricted Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) Giorgia Meloni has said the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened without tolls or restrictions, emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation for global economic stability.

Speaking at the Europe–Gulf Forum in Costa Navarino, she argued that resolving tensions in the strategic waterway requires ensuring unrestricted maritime transit as a foundational step.

Meloni stated that economic prosperity across the Mediterranean, the Gulf region, and the wider world depends on maintaining open shipping routes through the strait, which is one of the most important global energy corridors.

She added that Italy is prepared to contribute to maritime security efforts when conditions allow, referencing ongoing European Union naval initiatives in regions such as the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The Italian premier also reiterated concerns about nuclear proliferation, stating that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, framing it as a broader regional security issue.
