UN Welcomes 45-Day Extension of Lebanon–Israel Ceasefire
(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel following US-mediated talks aimed at stabilizing the situation along the border.
In a statement, the UN said the 45-day extension of the cessation of hostilities followed discussions facilitated by the United States, and reaffirmed UN support for efforts to end violence and reduce civilian suffering on both sides of the Blue Line.
Guterres urged all parties to fully respect the agreement, refrain from further attacks, and comply with international law, including international humanitarian law.
The announcement follows confirmation from US officials that the ceasefire extension came after what Washington described as “highly productive” negotiations between the parties.
According to US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the ceasefire arrangement was extended to allow additional progress in ongoing diplomatic discussions.
The extension comes despite continued reports of sporadic strikes in southern Lebanon since the initial US-mediated ceasefire took effect, underscoring the fragility of the agreement.
