Solomon Islands Swears In New Prime Minister
(MENAFN) Matthew Wale was sworn in as the Solomon Islands' new prime minister Friday following his election by members of parliament, marking a significant shift in the Pacific nation's political leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in the afternoon at Government House, in the presence of Governor General David Tiva Kapu.
Wale secured the premiership in a tight 26-to-22 vote in the 50-seat parliament, defeating former Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Peter Shanel Agovaka. The contest narrowed further just before the session opened, when former Deputy Prime Minister Manasseh Maelanga withdrew from the race.
The incoming prime minister takes the reins from Jeremiah Manele, who was ousted on May 7 after parliament passed a motion of no-confidence against him.
Speaking outside parliament after Governor General Kapu announced the result, Wale acknowledged the weight of the moment. "We take the government at a difficult time, given what is happening throughout the world," he said, pledging fiscal discipline and prudent governance to steer the country through global headwinds.
In a direct appeal to the nation, Wale called for unity behind his reform agenda. "Change is coming. These changes are necessary and may be painful. I ask that you join with your government in putting your hand to the plow. Let us all unite and count the cost of effecting the changes that are necessary to position our country to flourish," he said.
Born in 1968, Wale first entered parliament through a by-election in 2008. He previously ran for prime minister following the 2019 election, losing that contest and subsequently serving as Leader of the Opposition. A second bid for the top office in 2024 also fell short, with Manele defeating him at the time.
