Powerful Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Japan's Miyagi


(MENAFN) A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan on Friday, the nation's weather agency confirmed, with no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the tremor hit at 8:22 p.m. local time at a depth of 50 kilometers, registering lower 5 on Japan's seven-point seismic intensity scale in the most severely affected areas of Miyagi Prefecture.

The quake's epicenter was pinpointed off the Miyagi coastline, at a latitude of 38.9 degrees north and a longitude of 142.1 degrees east.

The JMA confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the seismic event.
