US Apache Helicopter Makes Precautionary Landing in S. Korea

(MENAFN) A US military helicopter executed an emergency landing Friday in a rice field south of Seoul, with no injuries reported, according to Seoul-based media, citing local authorities.

Officials confirmed that an AH-64E Apache set down as a precautionary measure in a rice field in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi province — approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) south of the capital. Both pilots aboard escaped unharmed, and no fire or secondary incidents were recorded at the scene.

Police indicated that US Forces Korea intends to repair and recover the aircraft on-site, a process anticipated to span two to three days.

"The situation is under control through coordination between military personnel and local authorities, and an investigation is under way to determine the exact cause of the landing," the Eighth US Army said.

Authorities are now examining the sequence of events surrounding the incident after the pilots flagged possible engine overheating as the likely trigger for the precautionary touchdown.

South Korea, a cornerstone US ally in the Asia-Pacific, currently hosts more than 28,500 American troops under the terms of a bilateral mutual defense treaty.
