Germany’s Merz Jeered Over Government's Economic Plans

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was met with loud jeers Friday during an address at a national Catholic gathering in Wurzburg, as young attendees unleashed sharp protests over the government's economic direction and its retreat from climate commitments.

The confrontation ignited when a young delegate squared off against Merz over his recent comments implying Germans should put in longer hours at work. The participant went further, voicing opposition to proposed reforms of the social security system and pointing to the burden of rising living costs — prompting the chancellor to push back.

"In my party, no one has ever said that people in Germany are lazy. Nor have I," Merz said, insisting his widely scrutinized remarks were solely aimed at questioning the viability of a four-day workweek.

"A country like Switzerland has working hours that are 200 hours a year longer than Germany's. And Switzerland is demonstrably better off than we are," he added.

As Merz sought to hold the floor, a group of young protesters repeatedly broke in, chanting that his administration's agenda was steering the nation toward a "catastrophic" outcome. They further condemned what they characterized as a deliberate unwinding of climate commitments through sweeping changes to the country's energy framework.

Moderators failed to contain the unrest. Protesters continued shouting and whistling, and some unfurled a banner directly accusing Merz of accelerating the climate crisis. Security staff ultimately removed several demonstrators from the venue.

The episode marked the second consecutive week Merz has faced public hostility. Just days earlier on Tuesday, during a speech before a trade union congress in Berlin, the chancellor's call for economic reforms and social security restructuring was drowned out by boos and whistles from the assembled delegates.
