Andy Burnham Enters Race to Challenge Starmer’s Leadership
(MENAFN) Britain's former Health Secretary Wes Streeting threw his weight Friday behind Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest the Makerfield by-election — a political maneuver that could set the stage for a direct leadership challenge against Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"We need our best players on the pitch. There is no doubt that Andy Burnham is one of them," Streeting, who stepped down as health secretary on Thursday, wrote on the U.S. social media platform X.
The show of support came a day after Labour Party lawmaker Josh Simons announced his intention to vacate his seat, deliberately triggering a by-election in Makerfield to clear a path for Burnham's re-entry into Parliament — a prerequisite for any viable leadership bid against Starmer.
Burnham swiftly confirmed his intentions, making clear he intends to seek the party's formal approval to enter the race.
"I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC (Labour Party's National Executive Committee) to stand in the Makerfield by-election," Burnham wrote on X.
Starmer has held firm against mounting pressure from within his own ranks to announce a departure date or transition timeline, even as Labour absorbed punishing losses in recent local elections. The results delivered a stark warning, with Nigel Farage's Reform UK surging dramatically across traditional Labour strongholds.
How a Leadership Challenge Would Unfold
Under Labour Party rules, a leadership contest can be triggered in one of two ways: either the incumbent leader voluntarily steps aside, or at least 20% of Labour lawmakers formally nominate a challenger.
With Labour holding 403 seats in Parliament, any prospective candidate would need the declared backing of a minimum of 81 lawmakers to officially launch a contest. Should a challenge be triggered, other candidates may also enter the field provided they too secure nominations from 81 parliamentarians.
As both the sitting prime minister and party leader, Starmer would automatically appear on the ballot should he choose to defend his position — and would retain the keys to Downing Street for the duration of the contest.
