Trump Touts "Great Trade Deals" with China

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump declared Friday that Washington had secured "a lot of great trade deals" with China — encompassing sweeping aircraft and engine purchases — following high-stakes talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Addressing reporters aboard Air Force One as he departed China, Trump hailed the diplomatic visit as a resounding success.

"We had a great stay. It was an amazing period of time. President Xi is an incredible guy," Trump said.

Among the headline agreements, Trump outlined Chinese commitments to purchase over 200 Boeing aircraft, with an additional pledge covering 750 more planes, and orders of between 400 and 450 engines from General Electric — deals set to inject billions into the American manufacturing sector.

"We're going to be doing a lot of trading," Trump said. "Our farmers are going to be very happy with the deal."

Notably, Trump revealed that despite two full days of negotiations, tariffs never entered the conversation.

"We didn't discuss tariffs," Trump said. "I mean they're paying tariffs. They're paying substantial tariffs, but we didn't discuss it."

"It wasn't brought up," he added.

Taiwan also featured in the bilateral discussions, though Trump was careful to signal neutrality on the contentious issue, stating he made "no commitment either way" regarding the self-governed island. He characterized Xi as a leader who "doesn't want to see a war," and said a decision on future U.S. arms sales to Taipei would come "over the next short period."

Turning to Iran, Trump signaled continued openness to a deal that would see Tehran freeze its nuclear program for two decades, while insisting that any such assurances "have to be real." When pressed on whether he had dismissed Iran's most recent proposal, Trump was characteristically blunt.

"I look at it, and if I don't like the first sentence, I just throw it away," he said.

Trump also pushed back against assessments that Iran retains significant missile capabilities, asserting that Tehran's stockpile had been slashed by 80% in the course of the U.S. conflict with Iran.

In a further development with far-reaching economic implications, Trump indicated he was weighing the removal of sanctions on Chinese firms that had purchased Iranian oil — a direct outcome of his consultations with Xi.

"I'm going to make a decision over the next few days," he said.
