Doha, Qatar: Dubai Police apprehended a motorist for reckless driving, including weaving between vehicles, sudden swerving at high speed, and overtaking from the road shoulder.

Police took the necessary legal action against the driver, identified as Asian, including impounding the vehicle and enforcing the provisions of Local Decree No. (30) of 2023, which stipulates a fine of AED 50,000 to release an impounded vehicle for such offences.

Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said that such behaviour ranks among the most serious traffic violations, as it causes confusion for road users and leaves other drivers with insufficient time to react or avoid a collision, particularly on high-speed highways where sudden swerving or loss of control may cause the vehicle to overturn or lead to severe collisions resulting in fatalities and serious injuries.

He pointed out that overtaking from the road shoulder is a grave offence, as the shoulder is designated for emergencies, ambulances, and civil defence vehicles.“Misusing it can lead to sudden and serious accidents and puts the lives of road users at risk,” he added.

Furthermore, he warned drivers against reckless and dangerous driving or any behaviour that endangers their own lives and the lives of others, stressing that the law holds accountable anyone who drives in a manner that threatens the safety and security of roads and their users.
