UN Backs Washington Talks as Lebanon–Israel Dialogue Continues
(MENAFN) The United Nations on Thursday voiced optimism that a fresh round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel taking place in Washington could reinforce ceasefire initiatives and help build momentum toward enduring stability in the region.
“Turning to Lebanon, we hope that the latest round of direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington planned for today and tomorrow, will contribute to an effective and durable ceasefire and open a path towards lasting peace,” deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told the reporters.
The third round of US-facilitated Lebanon–Israel discussions got underway at the State Department on Thursday, even as casualties from continuing Israeli operations in Lebanon kept increasing.
A State Department representative informed a news agency that the United States delegation includes Counselor Michael Needham, US envoy to Israel Mike Huckabee, and US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa.
On the Lebanese side, the delegation is headed by Amb. Nada Hamadeh along with Lebanese presidential special envoy Simon Karam. Israel is represented by Amb. Yechiel Leiter, Deputy National Security Advisor Yossi Draznin, and senior military officials, according to the same source.
Haq further noted that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is still tracking “significant” aerial and military movements throughout its operational zone, which also includes repeated Israeli airstrikes reported on Wednesday.
