Canada to Double Electricity Generation as Demand Surges

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Thursday that Canada intends to significantly expand its electricity production over the next twenty years in response to growing demand and to enhance national energy stability.

“Electricity demand in Canada is expected to double by 2050, so we will double our grid,” Carney said during a news conference in Ottawa.

He further explained that the country’s strategy is closely tied to expanding electrification across the economy, stating, “Canada will double its electricity generation over the course of the next two decades, because the path to affordability is electrification.”

Carney emphasized that the transition toward greater use of electricity is a cornerstone of both economic growth and environmental policy. “The path to competitiveness is electrification,” he said, adding that “electrification underpins everything, our emissions, our environment, our economy, our evolution.”

Addressing global instability and strained trade dynamics with the US, Carney noted that conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, along with broader geopolitical tensions, are contributing to rising energy costs worldwide, including in Canada.

He concluded by pointing to increasing energy needs, stating, “huge energy demand,” and stressing “it's essential and crucial that Canada develop its own resiliency and make its own contribution.”
