Schumer Blasts Trump’s Iran Conflict
(MENAFN) US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Thursday during a Senate floor speech over what he described as an “illegal war” with Iran. He contended that the confrontation has eroded the United States’ global position, stretched military capabilities, and empowered rival powers on the international stage.
Schumer also asserted that the ongoing conflict has already imposed a significant financial burden on American taxpayers, estimating the cost at no less than $29 billion. He warned that the broader consequences extend beyond economics into the country’s diplomatic credibility and defense readiness.
"America's reputation on the world stage has been further tarnished. American munitions stockpiles are shrinking at a time when we need them to deter other aggressors around the world," Schumer said.
He further questioned the Trump administration’s strategic goals, suggesting that geopolitical competitors—particularly China—are deriving advantages from the situation. He argued that Washington’s global standing is being undermined while its rivals capitalize on the instability. "The American people may not be benefiting from Trump's war, but our competitors, our rivals across the globe certainly are," he said.
Schumer additionally cautioned that China is attempting to reframe its international image amid the turmoil, portraying itself as a stabilizing force while the US is distracted.
"As Trump drags America's reputation through the mud, China now presents itself as a source of stability and reason on the world stage." He also referenced reports claiming potential Chinese arms transfers to Iran and warned that Beijing could adopt a more assertive stance toward Taiwan as American military attention and resources are increasingly diverted elsewhere.
