Finland Heightens Security After Suspected Drone Activity
(MENAFN) Finnish officials detected a suspected drone operating within the nation’s airspace above the southern Uusimaa area early Friday, prompting heightened security precautions and public warnings.
“A danger alert has been issued for Uusimaa regarding drones. Official measures are underway. The Defense Forces have intensified their surveillance and counter-capabilities,” Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated on the US social media network X.
The prime minister’s remarks followed an announcement by the Helsinki City Rescue Department on X, which revealed that “a potentially dangerous unmanned aerial vehicle” could be traveling through the region’s airspace. Residents were advised to remain indoors “until the end of the hazard situation is announced.”
According to a media outlet, air operations at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport were temporarily limited, resulting in delays and cancellations of several domestic flights.
Finnish defense authorities also confirmed that they promptly strengthened monitoring systems and response readiness after obtaining the report. Officials emphasized that the anticipated area of concern stretched between Helsinki and Porvoo.
Despite the incident, military representatives clarified that Finland is not currently under any immediate military danger.
Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Finland sought membership in NATO and officially joined the alliance in April 2023.
